The skin is our biggest organ, and our culture does put a lot of emphasis on keeping it clean. But at which cost? Body scrubs are pretty straightforward, aren’t they? They mechanically dislodge dead skin cells, opening up the pores for the release of accumulated waste. That sounds perfect, but there’s a caveat. When we disturb the surface layer of our skin, we are also disrupting our skin’s microbiome. And if we are using a product containing toxic chemicals, not only does this further damage the microbiome, but we also open the way for these toxins to easily penetrate the epidermis and enter our bloodstream (given that a lot of chemicals found in cosmetics are small enough molecules to be absorbed deeply).
What a peculiar ritual cleansing practice to scrape our porous protective organ with substances we don’t know anything about and would never want to eat! When we created our Body Scrub, we were thinking about Ancient Greece and the strigil, a scraping tool that the elite used to wash their body with pure olive oil. One of our customers told us once that they ended up with the scrub on their lips and were surprised how good it tasted. Despite the fact that we are not proponents of ingesting essential oils, it is interesting to note that this Body Scrub mostly consists of food ingredients. Plant foods.
We are lucky that our body still knows what to do with plants when they come in contact with us, whether through our digestive system or through the dermis layer of the skin. And our internal cleansing systems actually gets triggered by some of those plants. So, if we are going to take that crud off our skin externally, might as well use plants that do just that in our bloodstream, a.k.a alteratives and lymphagogues.
This gentle sugar, magnesium and salt scrub contains an original blend of essential oils specifically designed for detoxification, targeting different systems of the body. This synergy is added to a blend of Coconut and Sunflower oils which are infused with Dandelion flower, harvested at the Herbal Hearth. Applied topically, Dandelion oil supports healthy lymphatic tissues, supporting the natural detoxification process of the body. Along with Dandelion is Juniper, the berries wild-harvested from the forest around our home, crushed by hand and sprinkled into the mix to provide extra exfoliation. The aromatics and cleansing properties of Juniper slowly infuse into the scrub, adding another layer of depth to the scent. Finally, we round that aromatic sticky business with honey. Antimicrobial and moistening, honey cleanses and nourishes the skin all at once. When we make this product, we sometimes forget about the beakers and cosmetic jars that surround us and feel like we are out of the apothecary and into the kitchen, making dessert. Lather knowing you are giving yourself a real treat.
This Body Scrub is best used instead of soap (picture yourself in Ancient Greece). Gather a small amount in your palms and gently rub onto skin in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. The scrub will leave your skin refreshed and protected with a light coat of oil.
